The trip is done and dusted but we’re all still trying to figure out how Copenhagen got added to our itinerary. From Copenhagen, we had to fly back to Seattle via Reykjavik, so we should have been able to take the Reykjavik-Seattle flight in the first place. But, for whatever reason, I’m glad we stopped at Copenhagen because it’s such a charming city and I doubt we would have otherwise planned a vacation there.
Home in Norrebro
We couldn’t have asked for a better home to stay in with kids. The family, in their introduction about themselves on Airbnb, wrote that they had three children. Their children’s room had bunk beds, a toy ambulance, a toy helicopter and lego blocks. Daksh and Vedant were in toy heaven :-).
Commute
Copenhagen is a small city so we walked or cycled everywhere. At the end of two days, our butts hurt from the hard cycle seats, so we gave up our bicycles even though we’d rented them for 3 days. I was a little worried about not taking the pram with us, in case Daksh or Vedant were sleepy, and sure enough, Vedant fell asleep twice in his cycle seat. I was really anxious cycling while he was asleep because his neck kept falling forward and I was afraid he’d sprain it. Thankfully no such thing happened.
Cafes
Food was the highlight of our stay in Copenhagen. We went to many unique cafes and restaurants that served delicious vegetarian fare. We also brought home lots of mouth watering baked delicacies from Meyers Bageri, one of the best bakeries in Copenhagen that was close to our rental. The city in general seemed very vegetarian and vegan friendly. Daksh is generally quite adaptive when it comes to eating outside, and Vedant is showing all signs of being that way. But Daksh really surprised us at one restaurant, called The Union Kitchen, by trying every single dish we ordered. The first photo is from the laundromat cafe, where we went for our first meal in Copenhagen. They used books as decor! The second was at The Union Kitchen, and the third at Aamanns Deli.
And on her birthday, Athena cut some croissants from Myers Bageri in lieu of a cake
Sightseeing in Copenhagen
The fort is quite underwhelming, especially compared to the forts we’ve seen in India. But it had a moat, and old cannons with cannon balls. We were done visiting in about 45 mins. This is Daksh and Vedant in the fort.
Very close to this was the iconic Little Mermaid Statue. But Daksh was more interested in the ice cream store nearby.
We saw this interesting square as we were cycling around, and decided to stop. And then we realized it was the entrance to Amalienborg palace, the residence of the Danish royal family. Daksh decided to test how stoic this guard could be.
Nyhavn is the waterfront area in Copenhangen, and we didn’t know what to expect there. In the end, the best thing we could do there was lounge on these wooden chairs and look over the water, while Vedant enjoyed Amma’s mixture.
Christiansborg Palace
Christiansborg Palace was rebuilt twice after it was destroyed by fire. It’s quite a grand palace, and parts of it seat the Danish parliament and are used for official receptions even today. Daksh was, predictably, bored at the palace and only the bribe of an ice cream at the end of it kept him going. When we were in the palace kitchens, both Daksh and Vedant insisted that I carry them. So here I am, supermom!
The photo below was just outside the Royal stables. Don’t miss the fluorescent crab on Vedant’s bum 🙂
Malmo
We were done cycling in Copenhagen, so Subbu tours came up with the brilliant idea of making a short train ride into Sweden, and adding another country to our itinerary. I woke up the next morning and said I wasn’t up to an early start, so the trip was almost canceled. And then a little while later we all decided to go anyway, and here we are, at the station, and in the train.
Our first stop was Malmo beach, because Arjun felt the vacation would be incomplete without a beach visit.
We spent the rest of the time just walking around Malmo and, of course, eating. At the Yello-mello.
Last stop in Copenhagen before we took our flight back to Seattle the next day :-).
